Strategies For Designing Game Rooms

Choose a focal point for your game room.

Decorating a game room can be almost as fun as the games themselves. Unlike many other gathering rooms in a house that might have a more formal feel, a game room should have a fun, casual feel to it and should reflect your personality. Game rooms can be geared towards board games, video games, children's games or more "adult" games such as poker or pool. They can even be a combination of them all, with perhaps a section of the room set aside for children. The final style of the room should put function first and appearance second.

Theme or Style

Decide on a theme or style of the room. Some game rooms are very masculine with dark, rich colors and heavy wood. Others feel more like a modern bar with sleek chrome, neon signs and colorful posters. Still other game rooms embrace the kitschy, with giant framed prints of dogs playing poker, blow-up beer bottles and other novelty items. A current trend in game rooms is to decorate the game room in a retro style, perhaps with an old jukebox, gumball machine and an old-fashioned pay phone. Deciding on a style before you start decorating will help you with the direction of your design.

Focal Point

Choose a focal point for the room. This will be what the rest of the decor will center on. Keep in mind that the room should allow for free movement and not be too crowded. For example, your focal point might be a large, expensive pool table, or it might be a hand-carved poker table. Both of these items should have a lot of space around them so that it is easy to maneuver in the room. Your focal point might even be a unique gas fireplace or flat-screen TV, if your game room features video games. In a child's game room, the focal point might be a large bookshelf system that houses board games and art materials.

Then, choose some decorative items to complement the focal point. For example, install a unique and modern light fixture over your pool table, hang a fun, game-themed print over the gas fireplace (perhaps from a classic movie such as Maverick) or throw some colorful bean bag chairs in front of the flat-screen TV. To complement the children's bookshelf, place a bright, comfortable rug in front of it where the children can work on puzzles or play board games.

Accessories

Finish up the design of the room by carefully choosing accessories. Game rooms are a great place to display collections. For example, invest in a lighted cabinet and arrange your collection of baseball memorabilia. Frame some of your favorite posters and hang art lights above each one. Antique items, such as an old dart board or advertising clock, look great on the wall in an old-fashioned game room. Consider hanging old game boards on the walls in a children's game room. You can often find old games at thrift stores. Again, let the style or theme of the room guide you when choosing your accessories.
