Suggestions To Design An Americana Family Room

An old jukebox can highlight a 1950s Americana decorating style.

American history has been a road paved with rebellion, resilience and a stubborn streak to rival any country in the world. That history can be easy to represent in words or pictures but can often be hard to show in decoration. An Americana decorating theme can feature any piece of American history and can display the spirit of America without overwhelming visitors.

Colonial Times

Portraying a colonial theme can help represent the spirit of traditional America through an intriguing design pattern. Colonial decorating often starts with a basic color pattern: red, white and blue. However, this does not mean that you need to plaster an American flag to every flat surface of your living room. Instead, use muted colors like a softer cherry red or cream instead of flat white. These colors tend to blend better into an overall design theme instead of overpowering everything else.

Natural wood furniture and decorations accent a colonial design very well and also can blend with the muted colors you choose. Use wooden cabinets to hide televisions, stereos and other electronics to give the room a old-time feel. Add classic nutcrackers and other simple wooden trinkets to adorn shelves and tables.

Baskets and wickerwork also can add to this colonial feel.

Nifty '50s

Decorate your living room with classic 1950s style to recreate the malt shop days of old for a real Americana twist.

This classic decorating style often features a checkered pattern, with colors including red, black and white. These colors can be stronger than those you used for the patriotic pattern, as the bold colors will help to accent the '50s decorations you use.

Install a malt shop bar or counter in the room, complete with classic spinning stools. A jukebox---full size or miniature---packed with the greatest hits from Elvis can bring back the memories of the American past. Decorate tables and shelves with model 1950s cars and find framed photos of star like Elvis and James Dean to adorn the walls.

Music

From the slave songs that led to the evolution of blues and jazz to the protest music of the '50s and '60s that defined a generation, music has long played an important role in American history. Paying homage to this musical evolution is a unique way to celebrate an Americana style.

Frame old records and their covers and use these to highlight the walls of your room. Color choice with this decorating style will vary by your taste in music; you may want to use lighter colors for Motown and pop, while darker shades may better reflect a jazz or blues theme.

Arrange the furniture in your room to take on the appearance of a jazz club. Keep instruments like guitars, banjos, bass and drums in different areas of the room to highlight the evolution of music. Use record covers to create a wall border, or to form a collage of the best of American music.
