Change Vlc File Associations

Change VLC File Associations

VLC Media Player is a powerful application that can play almost any audio or video file you may have on your PC. Given the program's versatility, it makes sense to use it as your primary media player. In order to do this, you need to associate all of your audio and video files with VLC. With older versions of the player you had to do this through your operating system, but newer versions of VLC allow you to do it from the player itself.

Instructions

1. If you do not have the most recent version of VLC, download and install it from www.videolan.org.

2. Open VLC player by double clicking the icon on your desktop or opening it through your Start menu.

3. Select "Tools" from the main menu bar at the top of the player. This will open a drop-down menu.

4. Select "Preferences" from the drop-down menu. This will open your Preferences window.

5. Click on "Interface" in the left-hand menu. Typically when you open the Preferences window you will automatically be in the Interface screen, but if not, make sure to select it from the left-hand menu.

6. Click on the "Association Setup" button, under the "Instances" section of the menu. This will open the list of file types with which VLC can be associated.

7. Place a check mark next to every file type you wish to associate with VLC. If you want VLC to open all possible file types, just click the boxes next to "Audio Files," "Video Files," and "Playlist Files." Otherwise, click on the specific file types you want associated.

8. Click on "Apply" at the bottom of the list, and when the list closes, click on "Save" at the bottom of your Preferences window.
