Convert Audio File Formats

portable music player

Digital audio files can be saved and stored in a number of different file formats, from the commonly-used MP3 and WAV to the Windows Media-based WMA and other proprietary formats including Sony's ATRAC and Dolby's AAC. At times, the user may desire to convert certain audio files to different formats for use in other programs or to change the size of the file. With a good audio conversion software program, this can be done in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

1. Find an audio conversion software program that supports the file formats you wish to convert to and from. A variety of programs have been created for this purpose, including Switch audio converter from NCH Software. Some programs are free to download, while others must be purchased. While the terms and buttons used with each program may be slightly different, the process will be the same.

2. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the software. The program should open automatically when installation is complete.

3. Click "Add Files" on the top toolbar. This allows you to search your hard drive and locate the audio files you wish to convert. Highlight the desired files to bring them into the main conversion window.

4. Click the "Output Format" button. This will bring up a list of the available file formats--select the one you wish to convert to.

5. Click "Browse" to find and select an existing folder to use as the output folder, or create and name a new folder for the converted files to be routed to.

6. Click "Encoder Options" if you wish to adjust the Bitrate and quality of the audio file, knowing that a higher-quality file will mean a larger file that takes up more memory space. Click "OK" when the settings are to your liking.

7. Click "Convert", either on the top toolbar or the bottom right side of the main window. The files will convert to the selected format and move to the selected output folder upon completion.
