Learning make a cardboard jukebox will give you a decoration for any 1950s-themed party or get together. From a school sock hop fundraiser to a birthday party or class reunion, there are plenty of reasons to throw a 1950s party---no decor will be complete without a jukebox in the background or front and center.
Read on to learn exactly make a life-size jukebox on a small budget, using simply cardboard and other supplies that can be purchased at your local craft or home store.
Instructions
1. Lay your refrigerator box flat on the ground. Trace with a pencil the outline of your jukebox---it should have a box-like shape with a curved top. Refer to jukebox photos online or in books to get an idea of how they were shaped in the 1950s.
2. Cut along your pencil sketch so your cardboard box is now straight on the sides and curved at the top, using the X-ACTO knife.
3. Smooth newspapers all over the front and back of the cardboard. Glue these down so they are flat and do not have any bumps or creases. The newspapers will help to reinforce the strength of your final jukebox.
4. Paint white primer all over the newspaper so you have a completely blank canvas. Use large house paint brushes for the large surface areas and smaller detail brushes for the sides and corners.
5. Use your colorful paints to draw on the details. You may want to sketch these ahead of time. Include buttons, classic 1950s song titles, a "change slot" and a window. Use plenty of bright colors---primary and neon work great.
6. Cut four triangles out of the leftover cardboard---each approximately 4 feet long each. Glue two of these to each side of the back of the jukebox to serve as a stand to keep the jukebox upright.
