Develop A Magnetic Stirrer From A Classic Computer

A magnetic stirrer is a piece of laboratory equipment. It has a base with revolving magnet. A jar or canister is placed on top of the stirrer with a piece of metal inside called a stir bar. When the stirrer is turned on, the revolving magnet makes the stir bar spin, stirring up whatever is in the jar.

Instructions

1. Remove the power supply and hard disk from an old computer. Remove the casing from the hard drive. You will see the platter, which looks like a CD, and an arm that runs over it. Remove the arm.

2. Disassemble the arm and save the brackets. Remove the magnets from the brackets.

3. Take out the computer's fan. Clean it with a swab and alcohol. Trim the black and red coverings from the ends of the wire.

4. Thread the red end into the socket of the AC adapter. Then thread the black end into the socket. Tape up the connection with electrical tape.

5. Put the magnet in the center of the fan. Plug in the fan. If the fan wobbles or falls over, reposition the magnet. Once you find the right spot, trace around it with a marker.

6. Glue the magnet into place. Mount the fan to a piece of wood or a lid that is the right size. Clamp the wood to a table.

7. Find something to use for a stir bar. A piece of metal or thick wire or a paper clip should work. It should be about an inch long.
