CDs made by a computer do not last as long as professionally produced CDs.
Any computer that has a CD or DVD drive can be used to copy CDs. Using an old computer for this purpose, however, lets you dedicate the computer to this task without interruption. The other reason to use an old computer is that duplicating CDs doesn't take a lot of processing power and can be a good use of an old computer that is too slow for other projects.
Instructions
1. Read your motherboard's manual to see if it will hold two or more drives. Your motherboard will either have a connection for IDE drives, SATA drives or both. IDE connections can connect two drives to one cable for each connection. SATA drives can only hold one drive per cable and connection.
2. Open the computer case by unscrewing the access door from the back of the computer. Unplug the computer to be safe. Discharge any static electricity by touching something metal.
3. Install additional CD or DVD drives. Choose drives that have fast write speeds, usually a two digit number and an "x," such as 48x. If three speeds are listed, they are -- in order -- write, rewrite and read speed. For example, 48x 30x 52x where 48x is the write speed, 30x the rewrite speed and 52x the read speed. Screw the drives into open bay areas at the front of the computer. Remove the cover in front of the CD drive so that it can open at the front of the computer.
4. Connect a power cable from the power supply and a drive cable from the IDE or SATA connection on your motherboard to each drive.
5. Install CD copying software. Not all software allows you to copy to more than one drive at a time, so check the software to make sure it can do this.
