Fifties Party Adornments

Serve hamburgers and French fries at your 1950s theme party.

Encourage guests to your 1950s theme party to wear poodle skirts, tight sweaters, leather jackets, bobby socks, saddle shoes, skin-tight cuffed jeans and white T-shirts. Serve hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, soda pop in bottles and ice cream sundaes. Have hula hoop, dancing and bubble-gum-blowing contests. Play music from Elvis, Bobby Darin, Frankie Avalon, Little Richard and other 1950s rock and roll groups. Don't forget to include a few "I Like Ike" signs or buttons, referring to President Eisenhower's presidential campaign slogan.

Rock and Roll

Decorate your 1950s theme party with rock and roll. Hang or scatter old 45 rpm records and record players in the party area. Feature an old jukebox or a "prop" jukebox made of a cardboard box. Include some cut-out musical "notes" hanging on the walls. Add musical note-shaped confetti scattered on hard surfaces, like the food table. Put out a basket of bobby socks as party favors and for guests to wear while dancing.

Hot Cars

Hang pictures of 1950s hot rods and cars. Paint a "road" on Kraft paper and tape it to the floor. Hold mock drag races to compete for party favors. Feature checkered flags, and old ads for cars, their parts and their accessories. Don't forget a picture of James Dean, the quintessential '50s movie icon who died in a car crash. No 1950s party is complete without some mention of Elvis. Feature his picture, play his music or show his films.

Alaska and Hawaii

Admitted to the Union in the 1950s, Alaska and Hawaii were also popular party themes in the 1950s. Decorate for your 1950s party using either Alaskan or Hawaiian themed decorations--or both. For a Hawaiian themed party, decorate with pineapples, coconuts and grass skirts. Display exotic tropical flowers and real or artificial leis. For an Alaskan themed party, feature igloos, Eskimos, ice sculptures, prospecting for gold and dog sleds. Hang maps of each state, along with both state flags. Don't forget to include a banner welcoming Alaska and Hawaii into the Union.
