There are several new home server products available today. These computers are configured to act as a central entertainment and storage center for the whole house, and can allow music, movies and recorded television to be accessed from other computers on a home network. The home server can perform many of the functions of a digital video recorder or jukebox, making shared data easily available to everyone. A home server can also be configured for access from the Internet for either programming or configuration tasks, or to make data available outside of the home.
Instructions
Configure Internet Access to the Server
1. Log in to the home server and access the network settings for the server's local area connection. Set a static IP address for the server's connection that fits with your home network setup and is outside of the address range that is automatically assigned by your router.
2. Look up the appropriate network ports for the functions you wish to enable access to. Write down each port, for instance external mail is available on port 25. External web server access is available on port 80. Ensure that the ports for the services you want to be accessible are open on the server itself, or that the server's firewall is disabled altogether.
3. Log in to your Internet router. Access the settings under Gaming, Port Forwarding, or Virtual Server depending on your router's make and model. Create a rule which directs traffic for the functions you wish to be available from the Internet to the static address you assigned to the home server. Create a rule for each desired port pointing to the server's address.
4. Log in to a computer in another location and try the application you want to access from the Internet. Verify the correct ports are open if your connection fails to work properly.
