A Golden Wedding is an anniversary party celebrating a very significant milestone---50 years of marriage. It's definitely an achievement worthy of commemoration. And, just like many modern weddings, the cake---in this case the golden wedding cake ---is often the centerpiece of the party.
Recreating the Past
Did you love your original wedding cake? If so, considering recreating that cake for your modern guests, many of whom were not lucky enough to enjoy it the first time around. If your original cake was smaller and not sufficient to serve all of your guests you can ask your cake designer or baker to enlarge the cake (possibly adding an additional tier) or do what many modern budget-conscious brides do and supplement the decorative cake with a slices cut from a sheet cake kept out of sight in the kitchen. If you do decide to recreate your original cake, consider placing a framed photo of the original wedding couple and cake next to the golden wedding anniversary cake. If your first cake had a wedding topper, this is the perfect time to once again put it to good use.
A Blast From the Past
Maybe your first wedding didn't have a cake, or maybe you just want something different this time. A nostalgic cake may do the trick. If you were married in the late 1950s, for example, you could have a 1950s themed cake. This could be as simple as incorporating fashionable 1950s color choices - pink, seafoam green, or chartreuse, for example). Inspiration from 1950s industrial and architectural design can provide additional inspiration. Or go all out and embrace 1950s kitsch ---poodle skirts, diners, and jukeboxes are all possibilities that could be integrated into the cake decorations by a skilled cake artist.
Go Golden
Another option is to embrace the golden theme of the anniversary, and create a truly golden wedding cake. Choose a golden color cake for the interior: a traditional yellow cake with an interior yellow or golden-hued frosting layer will look wonderful when served on a plate. The cake's exterior, of course, is where you can fully indulge your golden fantasies. You can choose to accent a white frosted or fondant-covered cake with molded golden accents, perhaps sculpted out of sugar or colored white chocolate, or can choose to have an entire golden cake. Powdered gold can be mixed with a liquid and painted onto the cake itself, or your baker can use edible gold leaf.
