Graduation parties are an exciting occasion to look back on the successes of the past and anticipate the successes of the future. High school and college graduation celebrations are typically low-key affairs with a lot of good company, good food and good conversation. The most important thing that happens at a graduation party is that the graduate hears how proud his guests are of his accomplishments!
Words of Wisdom
Guests can offer written advice to the graduate. This can be done directly in a guest or keepsake book, or on slips of paper which can be assembled later in a scrapbook. People often have difficulty writing something on the spot, so offer them prompts such as: "The most important things I've learned since high school are. . . ." or "Before I started college, I wish that someone told me to. . . ."
Time Capsule
On the party invitation, ask guests to bring something (a written message, photo, newspaper clippings) to the party to be put into a time capsule that will be assembled for the graduate and given to him in the future; if he is graduating from high school and plans to attend college, it can be given to him at his college graduation. Be sure to take party pictures and save souvenirs to put into the capsule before sealing it.
Sharing Memories
A graduation party is a good time to share cherished memories about the graduate. This can be done in an informal way when guests are having cake and coffee; if the graduate's parents plan to say a few words to the crowd, they can ask for volunteers to share stories at that time.
Graduation Party Activities
Because young people dominate the guest list at a high school or college graduation party, entertainment is important. Charades and Twister are party games that young people enjoy. The limbo can be set up indoors or out, and some lively music can really energize a party! The late spring weather of graduation time lends itself to outdoor fun like sack races, badminton or an impromptu game of softball.
Party Rentals
According to party planner and author Ginger Venable, entertainment rentals can really make your party special. Wow your graduate and his guests with a jukebox, classic arcade/pinball machines, a photo booth, carnival games, a caricaturist or inflatables. Look in the yellow pages under "party rentals" for a selection of vendors.
Say Cheese
Buy graduation-themed disposable cameras at your local party store and leave them on tables, encouraging guests to take pictures of fun party happenings. As the host or guest of honor, it is impossible to keep track of all guests at all times, and looking back at pictures later on will enable you to experience what you missed the first time!
