Apple's New Nano
Something I've noticed about having an iPod: once you buy one, you're automatically commiting yourself to spending a fortune on accessories such as docking speakers, special ipod car accessories, mp3 iGroove stations with woofers, sub-woofers, barking dogs, and more--when you already have a terrific surround sound system in your house, or when you already have a couple cutting-edge boomboxes thank you very much!
Do you really need to buy yet another set of portable speakers when you have more than enough audio equipment in your possession already?
No! Here's a $4 solution that will allow you to use any sound system you already have (stationary or portable) to broadcast the content of your mp3 player--inside your house, outside, or even on the moon.
Instructions
1. It is assumed you already have an mp3 player (iPod).
Go to eBay and buy yourself a wireless FM transmitter for around $4. Load it with a couple AA batteries. This is the brains of your new docking station or portable speaker system.
2. For a stationary MP3 player docking station:
If you want to use your surround sound to blast your iPod throughout your house, just tune your radio to a generic (staticky) station. Tune your FM transmitter to the same station. Plug the FM transmitter into the headphone jack on your iPod. Press PLAY, and presto!, you have a docking station better than anything Klipsh can market.
3. If you want to carry your music with you and, say, play your iPod out of portable speakers all around your yard when you're having a party, this is what you do:
Take all the boomboxes you can gather. Set their radio stations to the same static station. Set your FM transmitter to the same station. Plug the FM transmitter into your iPod or other mp3 player, and press PLAY.
You are now the best DJ on the block!
4. For those of you who don't have an MP3 player, but do have iTunes loaded with music, you can use your computer in the same way. Just plug the FM transmitter into the headphone jack of your computer/laptop and broadcast the music through your surround sound. Very nice mp3 speakers indeed!
5. The same basic technique works for playing an MP3 player in your car. The only iPod car accessory you need is that $4 wireless FM transmitter, and you can use your car speakers as your MP3 player portable player. Again, tune your car radio to a station with static, etc...
