iPod Plugin Alternative
Standard methods of iPod connectivity are through the USB cord that comes with all current models. The USB plugin allows users to charge their iPod, manage songs through their computer with iTunes, and play songs from the iPod through both internal and external computer speakers. However, there are several alternatives to these options.
Audio-Visual Plugins
Apple and several third-party retailers offer AV Composite cables that can connect an iPod to a television using standard red, yellow and white composite connections. These cables attach to the iPod through the 30-pin connector also used to attach earbuds or headphones. This option allows you to play iPod content, such as picture slideshows, music and video through your home television.
Connecting in the Car
The iPod's 30-pin connector allows several options for car audio connectivity. Accessories available include direct connection cables for a car's 30-pin auxiliary input and tape deck adaptors, which allow you to play iPod audio through a front-loading cassette player. As far as charging the iPod, there are also car adaptors available that connect from a vehicle's cigarette lighter into the iPod dock port.
External Speakers
There are several alternatives available for connecting the iPod directly to external speakers. Some battery-powered or rechargeable speakers are available to interface directly with the 30-pin connector, while other options include desktop stereos with built-in docks that play music and charge the iPod as well.
