Gibson mandolins became famous in the 1900s. Orville Gibson created unique models that were labeled either 'A' models or 'F' models. Most mandolins that came out from the Gibson Company stable had printed labels with the words Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Co. as part of the logo. However, some instruments came with different logos. Gibson's mandolin designs became so famous that just having the headstock logo with the words 'The Gibson' was a musician's guarantee of a faultless product. The peak years of production were from 1900 to 1930.
'Gibson' and 'The Gibson' Logos
When people are trying to authenticate Gibson models, they often look at the logo. These are usually located somewhere on the headstock. There were a set of logos written in italics that were inlaid in gold color. Some said 'The Gibson' and others only had the word 'Gibson'. Each of these indicates that the model is original. A list of Gibson models along with their images will help you authenticate the Gibson logo.
Gibson Logo Lettering
Gibson logos came in a number of styles. There was the bold style where none of the characters were interlinked. While some were in italics, others were on the uppermost part of the headstock. Some mandolins had Gibson logos that were hand-cut. This was on a jigsaw and featured an open "b" and "o". These would often be inlaid into the headstock veneers. Sometime in the 1940s, there came a logo that was in gold and written in Italics. In terms of the letters, the "I" was connected to the "G".
Gibson's Last Model and Logo
Before Orville Gibson passed on, he created a mandolin that was different from standard Gibson mandolins. The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Co. logo on this particular model was completely written by hand and it looked nothing like the usual Gibson style. It read: "O.H. Gibson 1906." There was no reference to the company. The same was found on the mandolin's tailpiece cover with the words "O.H. Gibson" in place of the "The Gibson" logo. At the base of the tail plate was the year as well.
