Nostalgic Tea Party Ideas

Increasingly popular, tea parties allow an indulgence in nostalgia for another time.

Tea parties for adults bring back the innocent days of sharing "tea" with dolls and loyal stuffed animals. With special themes, the afternoon celebrations are even more nostalgic. Surprise your friends with a trip back in time, along with a calming cup of tea and delicious treats.

Mad Hatter Tea Party

Share "Wonderland" with a mother-daughter tea party fashioned after the Mad Hatter's party in "Alice in Wonderland." Use mismatched, whimsical teacups and teapots, and decorate with clocks, watches, hourglasses and other timepieces; a cluttered table will serve the theme even more. Serve bread and "the best butter" sandwiches, scones and cupcakes or cookies labeled "Eat Me," along with sugar cubes to sweeten the tea. Play a game of croquet with traditional or silly rules.

Victorian Tea Party

Hark back to a more formal time with a Victorian theme. Decorate with fresh flowers, lace or linen tablecloths, handkerchiefs and ribbon. If you don't have old photographs, "age" black-and-white prints with crackle medium and a sepia acrylic paint wash, or by placing them in strong coffee for 10 to 15 minutes. Encourage your guests to wear hats decorated in a Victorian-era fashion. Use matching teacups and saucers with coordinated linen napkins, and serve the treats in tiered dishes. Small cucumber and cream cheese or smoked salmon sandwiches match well with tiny tarts, scones, cakes or muffins.

Sock Hop Tea Party

Rock around the tea table with a sock hop theme. Cover the tables with pink felt poodle "skirts." Add 50s rock icon cutouts to the table centerpieces and hang vinyl records from the walls or ceiling. Ask guests to dress in 1950s fashions; have everyone leave their shoes at the front door. Cover a box or bookcase to look like a jukebox and string colored lights around the edges. Serve iced tea in sundae or ice cream soda glasses, along with miniature hamburgers and fries. Add a sweet touch with wafer candies, wax lips and banana splits. Crank up tunes from Elvis, Chuck Berry, Pat Boone and others, and dance along.
