Play An Hd Dvd On Linux By Having An Lg Ggch20l

HD-DVD looks just like a CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk.

Playing HD-DVD movies on Linux is not simple. The reason for this is that HD-DVD uses DRM to copy protect the material on the disk. Companies have kept the open-source community from using DRM-protected software and media because of licensing issues. The keys and software are traditionally sold to vendors or given freely if not used for income, such as a movie theater, which replays the movies for profit. That leaves those in the open-source community having to import keys manually. The LG GGC-H201, however, works right out of the box with Linux.

Instructions

1. Download and install the most current version of MPlayer and FFMPEG available for your distribution. This alone may allow you to play your HD-DVD movies; if not, then the movie may need to be temporarily stored to your hard disk drive and read from there for playback with the following steps.

2. Download and install the latest version DumpHD and keydb.cfg. Installation of sun-java6-bin will also be required if you do not have it installed already.

3. Insert your HD-DVD movie into the LG GGC-H201 drive and run "mplayer -vc ffvc1 /media/(movie title)/HVDVD_TS/FEATURE*EVO" in Terminal. If the movie didn't play, then run DumpHD by issuing "sudo ./dumphd.sh" and proceed to the next step.

4. Select the movie disk as the source and select a place to save the movie to your hard drive (make sure you have a spare 30 gigabytes of space available), preferably a temp folder. Run "mplayer -vc ffvc1 "/tmp/(movie title)/HVDVD_TS/FEATURE*EVO"" to play your movie.

5. Delete the movie from your hard disk drive once you've watched it. HD-DVD movies take up a lot of space, unless you have a server with ample space on it you won't want to eat up your hard drive on movie content.
