Remove Media Player Database

Windows Media Player is the built-in media software for Windows systems. Windows Media Player creates a library full of the media files on your computer, network or other specified locations. A disadvantage to WMP's automatic library creation tool is that it does not delete invalid and old media entries. If you move a music file to another location, it will be listed twice, once in the old location and once in the new. If you use WMP for your media consumption, you might end up with a massive library full of incorrect data. You can delete the WMP database and start the process over.

Instructions

1. Click "Start" and "My Computer."

2. Double-click your C: drive, or the specific drive that contains your user account's My Document files.

3. Double-click "Documents and Settings." Double-click the folder labeled with your user name. Double-click "Local Settings," "Application Data," "Microsoft" and "Media Player."

4. Scroll through the folder to find the database file with a ".wmdb" extension. Right-click this file and choose "Rename." Change the extension to ".bak."

5. Open Windows Media Player. Click "Tools" and "Search for Media Files." Click "Browse." Select the folders where you store your media files. Click "OK" and "Search." Windows Media Player scans your computer and recreates the library.
