Renovate Juke Boxes

Not all juke boxes are made the same. Some play CDs and other play records of varying sizes. After determining the extent of your refurbishing project, you can contact a local antiques dealer and juke box restoration resources to obtain replacement parts and items needed to restore your juke box to a better condition. Much of the process of restoring a juke box involves assessing and repairing damage.

Instructions

1. Wipe off any dust and debris that has collected on the juke box. Use a dry lint free dust cloth to wipe the glass panels and wood frame of the jukebox. Using a pencil and note pad list any identification information about the model and manufacturing of the juke box.

2. Photograph the juke box in its entirety. Use the camera to take pictures all the way around the juke box in a close enough distance for fine details to be seen. Focus on areas with visible damage that may need repair and add a notation of these particular areas in your notes.

3. Determine the components that will need replacement and repair. Measure the juke box and note the required component measurements for wood panels, glass panes and other fittings. Identify the type of wood the juke box was originally constructed in and order replacement wood of the same type or a similar grain.

4. Check your previous measurements of the wood for accuracy. Mark the cut lines on the inner panels each of your wood panels before you begin cutting any of them. Sort the wood panels according to the order you will be placing them on the juke box such as if you are working from bottom to top or top to bottom on the juke box to stay organized.

5. Cut the required sections of your first replacement wood piece. Refer to your photograph of the original juke box structure and carve in any intricate details you may need into the wood panels.

6. Attach the new wood panel using the nails and screws necessary. After you have replaced the wood paneling along the bottom and sides of the juke box begin replacing the top section.

7. Check that the unit is standing evenly and not tilted or misaligned. Adjust any panels as needed to stabilize the structure and make it even.

8. Reconstruct the housing unit for the music player separately including openings and fastenings for the needed wire feeds. Attach the base for the housing unit to the juke box top and then set the housing unit in place. Secure the music unit to the juke box with the needed hinges to allow access to the records and music player.

9. Prepare a wood putty to fill in any lightly damaged areas in the original wood and to correct any repositioned drill or tool marks from adjustment. Once the putty has set assemble your sanding machine and sand even the entire juke box. Use the mechanical sander for the main panels of the juke box frame and new wood attachments.

10. Dust off the debris remaining from sanding. Apply the first coat of your wood stain. Let the first layer of wood stain dry and add successive layers between drying until the wood has reached the required finish then and add in any other details to the finished structure such as paint designs or hardware attachments.
