"
Left 4 Dead" is well-known for its potential modding properties. Using its Source Engine tools, you can modify nearly everything in "Left 4 Dead," including the guns, maps and sounds. For some modders, rather than modify existing sounds, they choose to replace them with their own sound files. Replacing the sounds in "Left 4 Dead" involves substituting the original sound file with one of your own choosing.
Instructions
1. Navigate to the sound directory inside of your "Left 4 Dead" folder on your hard drive. Choose the sound you want to replace, such as Tank.wav.
2. Locate a WAV file on your hard drive you wish to use to replace Tank.wav.
3. Rename Tank.wav to Tank2.wav. Cut and paste this sound file into a backup directory on your hard drive for safekeeping in case you need it later.
4. Rename your replacement sound file "Tank.wav." Cut and paste it into the sound directory in the "Left 4 Dead" folder.
5. Launch "Left 4 Dead." Press "~" to open the console. Type "snd_updateaudiocache" and press "Enter." Once this has completed, type "snd_rebuildaudiocache" and press "Enter." This will update and recomplie your audio cache so the game recognizes your new sound file.
6. Play the game as normal. In this example, when a Tank shows up to attack you, your new sound file will play instead of the original Tank music.
