Rock is powerful music and can make a great prom theme.
Prom is one of the most exciting high school events, but also one of the most stressful, especially when it comes to choosing an interesting and innovative theme. A rock and roll theme can please both girls and boys, but needs to be developed in order to avoid being ordinary. By choosing a piece of rock history with its own symbols and icons, you can create a cohesive prom theme.
Punk Rock
Punk rock was a type of rock music that developed as a backlash against the mainstream '70s rock. Punk is rebel music and a punk prom theme should reflect this. Incorporate lots of black with silver studs, pins and patches to achieve a punk look in your decorations. Any staff members dressing in accordance with the theme should be wearing ripped clothes and black leather, and sporting gelled and dyed hair. For photos, consider a backdrop of guitars and punk symbols like anarchy signs and safety pins. Punk-style pins and patches with the night's slogan are great for people to take home.
British Invasion
After The Beatles crossed the Atlantic, many other British bands became popular with the American public. This "British Invasion," including Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks seriously influenced the American music scene. A British Invasion-themed prom will involve lots of English flags and the colors red and blue. Decor could also involve British slang and sayings, or the famous British war phrase, "Keep calm and carry on." Consider putting up posters from the album covers of the most famous bands, and interspersing their songs throughout the night's soundtrack. A rock guitar with a British flag makes a nice photo backdrop. Little album posters or British flags make nice favors.
'60s Flower Power
The 1960s were the decade of the British Invasion, but also the decade of Woodstock, the Vietnam War and hippies. The ideas of peace and love, associated with the hippie music of Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, became popular. A rock prom with a hippie theme will involve anti-war posters and slogans, peace signs, the word "love" and psychedelic flowers. For photos use something with these symbols and rainbow tie-dye. Tie-dyed tableware and plenty of plants and flowers will give the room a hippie feel. If money permits, consider renting a decorated Volkswagen bus as a decoration or photo backdrop. John Lennon style glasses are a good favor.
'50s Rock
The 1950s saw the breakout of rock and roll, with its roots in R&B and blues crossover artists like Chuck Berry and Big Joe Turner. With the hit "Rock Around the Clock," Bill Haley and the Comets became famous overnight, soon joined by the "King," Elvis Presley. A '50s rock theme should be a little romantic, and little nostalgic, with black and white photos and classy decorations. Consider having mini-lessons in '50s style rock dancing. Incorporate posters or cutouts of '50s icons like Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and Audrey Hepburn, as well as Elvis, to get a real feel of the era. The eating area can use a '50s diner theme, with neon signs and diner menus and chairs, or even a soda fountain.
