Supplies For nineteen fifties Theme Party

Add a colorful jukebox to your 1950s party decor.

Whether you're throwing a 1950s theme party because you were, or your guest of honor was, born in the 50s or because it was the decade when you "came of age," your first order of business is to reflect the iconic music and images of the time, such as Buddy Holly and the all-American diner. Making a list of all the themed details -- from songs to snacks -- that you'll need for your celebration will lessen the chances of forgetting something important and improve the chances that your party will be a real "kick."

Music

The 1950s was a time of musical revolution in America, so items that showcase this theme should take priority on your planning list. Rent a jukebox from a local party supply store. Place novelty guitars on stands around the party space. Rent a movie projector and an over-sized screen so you can show footage from a 1950s concert featuring groups like Buddy Holly and The Crickets or The Flamingos. You can also use the screen to show slides of the guest of honor during the 1950s.

Party Table

Choose a pink and black tablecloth with a checkerboard design for your 1950s-themed party. Another idea is to create your own themed tablecloth with the aid of a poodle stencil; trace the design on pink, black or white construction paper, add pink or white cotton balls to "fluff up" the poodles and tape or glue them to a pink, black or white tablecloth. Items like coasters resembling vinyl records, along with all the supplies your guests will need to make their own ice cream floats or sundaes, are staples for the table as well. Rent a few 50s-style barstools, as well, with pastel pink, black or white cushions to match your decor.

Food

Diners were very popular during the 1950s, so typical diner food choices like hamburgers with all the fixings, including cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, ketchup and mustard, as well as french fries and milkshakes, are essential for your theme party. A barbecue grill is also a "must" if you're staging your party outdoors, since the backyard cookout became a common recreational activity during this decade. Plates, napkins and flatware in pastel blue or pink are ideal for a diner-style 50s party.

Fine china and white napkins are proper if you're planning a formal dinner party ode to the 1950s. This type of party also calls for food like green peas, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, along with the ingredients for an appetizer of Swedish meatballs and a chocolate lava cake for dessert.

Additional Decorations

Give your party space an even more authentic 1950s feel by hanging posters of musical artists from the decade, like Etta James, Ray Charles and Elvis Presley. Accent the posters with pastel pink or black frames, or tape a border of records made from black construction paper around the posters; add colored centers to the paper records to simulate the label area. If you have access to clothing from the era, frame a poodle skirt or leather jacket and display it on the wall, or check out your local thrift store for 50s-inspired items like wall hangings in the shape of ice cream sodas and poodles. It's also a good idea to add balloons in the shape of musical notes, electric guitars and jukeboxes to the party space, to emphasize the music and upbeat nature of the time period.
