Termites in the ground.
Termites in Australia are commonly called white ants. There are 350 species of termites that plague Australia, but the http://www.mollybutlerlodge.com/ termite is the most bothersome to homeowners. The termites often start out in a rotting tree or log and then quickly move into the house in their search of wood. The king and queen in the termite colony can live up to 70 years, so many colonies are firmly established before a home or garden are built near a nest, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Instructions
1. Remove all timber and wood rubble around the property that shows termite activity. Dispose of the wood or burn it if burning is legal in the area. Burn trees and stumps to the ground if they are infested with termites to prevent their spread.
2. Saw down dead and decaying trees on the property that the termites are nesting around, using a chainsaw. Dispose of the wood by burning or removal from the property.
3. Dig up the subterranean termites areas once the tree or wood they are infesting has been removed. Dispose of the dirt with the termites by removing from the property or burning.
4. Call a trained pest removal specialist to remove garden termites. They will often use Arsenical dust on termite nests in the garden. Arsenical dust is highly toxic and only available to trained and licensed pest-removal specialists.
5. Dig the area up around trees that are infested with termites. Work crumbled up Paradichloro-benzene (toilet block deodorizer blocks) into the soil to drive the termites away from the trees' delicate roots. Paradichloro-benzene can be purchased at most stores in Australia. Apply it 10 inches from the base of the tree.
6. Remove all infected wood under the house or other structure that the termites have damaged. Discard the wood promptly. Replace any beams, floors or supports with wood that is chemically treated against termites. Break up all mud termite tunnels and nest using a shovel or handheld trowel.
7. Apply Intrigue Dust (Triflumuron, C.I. Pigment Blue and Amorphous silica) to termite nests. Follow the directions on the label for application. In Australia, Intrigue Dust for termites is the only legal chemical that a homeowner can purchase to use themselves for termite control. The dust is sold by pest control dealers. A private, non-pest control person can only buy the dust in packs of five or 10, which might be much more than is needed but the dust can be stored safely in case of future infestations.
8. Drill holes into surrounding wood using a four-inch drill bit that is 1/2-inch in diameter. Apply the dust using a termite dust puffer. Follow the directions on the Intrigue Dust label for application. Application into the surrounding wood will help kill any remaining termites and keep additional infestations at bay.
