Sock Hop Suggestions For Grown ups

You can serve a variety of cocktails at an adult sock hop.

There's nothing like a sock hop to resurrect the innocent fun and good times of the '50s. Many adults are drawn to this simpler era and the nostalgia that a sock hop evokes. A casual atmosphere and lively music create the perfect environment to let your hair down and get to know everyone there. Once you decide to host a sock hop, there are endless ideas to create an authentic setting and recapture the magic of the past.

Location

Location is all important for a sock hop. If possible, hold it in a school or community gymnasium. If you don't have access to a gym, a large room with a wooden or tiled floor is next. The crucial thing is to have a floor that you'll be able to slide around on in your socks. For this event, a carpeted floor simply won't do. A room large enough to accommodate your guests is another must. You want plenty of room to move on the dance floor without bumping into each other. Halls belonging to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.), Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) and other clubs are options for an adult sock hop.

Music

The top choice here is a jukebox filled with hits from the '50s. The lights and sounds of an actual jukebox add greatly to the atmosphere. If a jukebox is not an option, stock up on several CDs with music from the era. Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino are some of the best-loved artists of the era. If you don't want to tie someone up tending to the music, place your CDs in a multiple CD player and hit random. The next song will be a surprise just as it was at the original sock hops. At an adult sock hop there are no chaperons to chastise you, so you can do as much dirty dancing as you please.

Food and Drinks

When you attended dances as a kid, alcohol was strictly prohibited. That's not to say it wasn't there, but if you wanted to imbibe, you had to do it on the sly. At this sock hop, the drinks can flow freely. Serve cocktails that were popular in the '50s such as the martini, the Old Fashioned, the Champagne cocktail and the Manhattan. Gear your appetizers toward the era as well. Offer your guests canapes, mini hamburgers, deviled eggs, mini pizzas, cheese balls and shrimp puffs.
