Use A Music Box

Music box movement

Music boxes have been enjoyed by children and adults alike since they first appeared in the 18th century. Traditionally, music boxes create sounds using a rotating cylinder with raised bumps that pluck the teeth of a metal comb. Some music boxes are used as jewelry boxes containing a ballerina that rotates with the music, while others simply function as a decoration.

Instructions

1. Remove the music box mechanism from its plastic case so that it is just the mechanical piece, known as the movement. This can be done using a flat-edged screwdriver.

2. Place the movement on a piece of paper and trace the edges. Mark the location of the mounting holes on the paper, as well.

3. Place the paper on the area of the box on which you want to mount the movement. Trace the paper onto the box using a pencil and mark the locations of the mounting holes.

4. Drill 1/8 inch mounting holes into the box. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in the area for the winder key.

5. Place the movement in the box and use 2 inch screws to attach it. Attach the winder key and twist it to ensure the music box works.
