Inventions Which Were Made Throughout 18651900

Vast improvements in technology in 1865-1900 radically changed the U.S.


The period of 1865-1890 saw vast changes in the United States and Europe. The era started with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and it ended with the rise of industry in the United States. A key element of this age was the advent of inventions that would introduce groundbreaking changes in technology, technology that would form the basis of life in Europe and the Untied States for the 20th century.


1865-1873


The Yale Lock was invented in 1865. It was based on inserting a key into a corresponding lock. Dynamite and the torpedo were invented in 1866, and both became major components of modern warfare. The typewriter was invented in 1867. The typewriter became the prominent tool for written work until the computer rendered it obsolete. Air brakes and traffic lights were invented in 1868. Air brakes are used in most forms of transportation. Trams and barbed wire were invented in 1863. Trams, or streetcars, became a mainstay of life in San Francisco.


1874-1881


The telephone, the four-stroke engine, the use of antiseptics in surgery and the carpet sweeper were invented in 1876. A small box containing gears with a long handle and wheels, carpet sweepers are commonly used in restaurants. Intake, compression, combustion and exhaust strokes make up the four-stroke engine. Phonographs and motion pictures were invented in 1877. Phonographs were used to play records well into the 20th century. In 1879, the light bulb was invented. In 1881, the metal detector was invented.


1882-1890


In 1884, the machine gun, steam turbine and cash register were invented. The steam turbine became a key driver behind heavy industry's forthcoming prominence in Europe and the United States. In 1885, the car, motorcycle and transformer were invented. Within a few decades, Henry Ford catapulted the car into prominence in U.S. society. In 1886, Coca-Cola was introduced. In 1888, straws were invented. In 1889 rayon, a synthetic fabric, was invented. In 1890, the jukebox and electric (model) train were invented.


1891-1900


In 1891, the escalator and electric kettle were invented. The vacuum flask, shredded wheat and the tractor were invented in 1892. The vacuum flask, also known as a thermos, keeps prepared food and drink at appropriate temperatures through the use of insulation. Radio was invented in 1895. 1897 saw the diesel engine's invention. In 1899, the paper clip was invented. In 1900, the zeppelin was invented.
