Make "Happy Days" Designed Advertising Boards

"

Happy Days
" 1950s-themed bulletin boards can teach life lessons.

"Happy Days" was a phenomenon that changed the face of television. Whole families identified with and watched the show. Parents recalled their youth and young people not only got a look back but learned from life situations that Richie and his friends dealt with. "Happy Days" themed bulletin boards can draw on several aspects of the show.

Richie and Friends

Richie and his friends dealt with any number of situations, but they dealt with them together with caring and sensitivity. You can create a "Happy Days" themed bulletin board focusing on friendship. Across the top of the bulletin board set the heading, "Friendship 'Happy Days' Style." Using pictures from "Happy Days," show Richie and his friends hanging out together, sharing and talking to one another.

Have the students write a paragraph or two on the meaning of friendship. Ask them to cut out their essays in a circular shape. Add these to the bulletin board, separating them with graphics of the 1950s such as a jukebox, motorcycle, leather jacket, pearls and saddle shoes. Add text blurbs such as "Friends don't turn their back on friends," "Friends talk out problems" and "Friends are happy when another friend succeeds."

"Happy Days" and Clothing Styles

Share 1950s clothing styles through the "Happy Days" show. The heading reads, "What We Wore During Happy Days --- 1950s." Ring the bulletin board frame with strings of fake pearls. Make text balloons to explain pictures of saddle shoes, leather jackets, poodle skirts, bobby socks, scarves, pedal pushers and dresses with pumps, pearls, gloves and hats. On each corner of the bulletin board frame, show pictures of the "Happy Days" cast. Add pictures students bring of their own families from the 1950s. Teachers can use the 1950s "Happy Days" clothing-themed bulletin board to talk about how clothing styles change.

Fonzie and Education

Fonzie can help you teach a positive lesson about the value of education. Though originally a high school dropout, during the show Fonzie not only gains his high school degree but also ends up teaching. Show pictures of bad boy Fonzie in school. Add a short description of Fonzie's story. Head this "Happy Days" themed bulletin board with "Education Gives You Choices and a Future." Text balloons can say, "Education gives you confidence," "Education gives you knowledge" and "Education gives you job opportunities."

Family

Use a "Happy Days" themed bulletin board to focus on the importance of family. Under the heading "Family Means...," add one or more pictures of the Cunningham family. Have students draw a picture either of their family or of their ideal family. Add them to the bulletin board. Around them add text balloons with "Caring and sharing," "Related by marriage, blood, adoption or choice," "Supporting one another no matter what" and "Love."
