Use iTunes to transfer music to your iPhone in one of three ways.
To download music to your iPhone, launch iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone using the cable it came with. Then choose a sync method to suit the time you can afford to spend on selecting music to copy over to your iPhone. If you have ample space on your device for your entire music library, by all means download everything. Otherwise, instruct iTunes to sync by particular playlists or specify individual tracks. You can use the "Sync" button or simply drag and drop selections onto your iPhone. In any case, downloading your music to your iPhone through synchronization is mercifully straightforward.
Instructions
Playlists
1. Select your iPhone under Devices in the left pane, and then click the "Music" tab above main pane on the right.
2. Select the "Sync Music" box and confirm the action if prompted. You can then transfer all music from your iTunes library by choosing the "Entire Music Library" check box option, if you wish. But if your music library is extensive and your iPhone's storage capacity limited, choose the "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres" check box option instead.
3. Activate the check box option beside each playlist, artist, album and genre that you want to sync. You can also choose "Automatically fill free space with songs," if you wish.
4. Click "Apply" in the lower right of the window to sync your music to your iPhone according to your settings.
Check Box Options
5. Select your iPhone under Devices in the left pane, and then click the "Summary" tab above the right pane.
6. Activate the "Sync only checked songs and videos" check box option. Then click "Apply" in the lower right of the iTunes window. If the sync begins, drag your iPhone slider to the right to stop it.
7. Click "Music" under Library in iTunes' left pane. All the songs in your music collection will appear, some selected, as indicated by the check marks, and others not. Ensure only the songs you want to transfer your iPhone are selected. If you'd like to start with a clean slate, deselect all your songs simultaneously by pressing "Ctrl" and clicking any song's check box. Conversely, press "Ctrl" and click any check box again to select all your songs.
8. Select your iPhone again under Devices in the left pane and the "Summary" tab above the right pane. Click "Sync" in the lower right of the window to transfer only your selected music to your iPhone.
Drag and Drop
9. Select your iPhone under Devices in the left pane, and then click the "Summary" tab above the right pane.
10. Activate the "Manually manage music and videos" check box option. Then click "Apply" in the lower right of the window. If the sync begins, drag your iPhone slider to the right to stop it.
11. Click "Music" under Library in iTunes' left pane or one of the playlists you created below. Select only the tracks you want to transfer to your iPhone. Press "Shift" and click the first and last songs in a block of desired songs that appear together, or press "Ctrl" and click songs that are far apart on the list.
12. Click and drag your group of highlighted songs over to your iPhone icon under Devices in the left pane. Your selected music will copy over to your iPhone automatically.
