Americana is a popular decorative motif. While much of the time, the decorating theme is associated with the early days of America, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. It's more important that items selected to adorn the walls in the Americana theme have the appropriate feel. These decorative items can usually be found at the local auction or flea market. While much of Americana decorating leans toward red, white and blue in terms of color, there are also plenty of options that don't include these colors, but still retain the flavor.
Stencils
Stencils are a way to not only add some Americana color to the walls, but also a bit of rustic charm. Don't be overly concerned about how straight the stencils are. While the designs shouldn't be completely off, it's OK for them to reflect the hand-painted nature of the project. Additionally, American motifs can be selected such as stars and stripes, gingham patterns and simplified farm animals.
Paintings on Wood
Wall art created in Americana style is often painted on old scraps of wood. Motifs include the usual fare like flags, but they can also include still life art, animal portraits or pictures of famous American presidents to name just a few ideas. These can be hung using wire or hooks for an extra rustic American look.
American Flags
One of the most authentic pieces of Americana to hang on the wall is an old American flag. For the collector of Americana, these pieces can often be found at auctions or flea market. Because some of them retain their value (provided they're in good shape), these items should be framed under glass. Additionally, they can be displayed in a series from older ones, featuring fewer stars to newer ones.
Decorative Plates
Americana is a popular decorative motif. As such, many items are available in reproduction, including plates made in Americana style. These treasures like old granite plates can found at a flea market and are perfect for wall display. To do this, the plates should be either mounted on individual plate holders or on plate racks.
Alternative to Red, White and Blue
For the people who would like to decorate with an Americana flair, but don't particularly want to have red, white and blue everywhere, the key is to incorporate items that fit the Americana theme. Items like horseshoes, tin plates, antique gardening tools, old license plates, signs taken from diners or five and dimes, wooden plaques or framed themed posters fit the Americana theme. Depending upon the item, they can be hung on hooks (gardening tools, tin plates, license plates) or nails. For a unique touch, if antique nails can be found, those can be used to hang items as well.
