Build Audio Recording Furniture

Making your own studio furniture can save you money.

Making custom furniture for your audio equipment can be a beneficial project for many home studio owners, especially if you have space limitations and specific equipment or storage needs that need to be addressed in your studio. While building some pieces of studio furniture may be too difficult for anyone except carpenters or craftsmen, most consumers can build a work-station that houses essential items and makes the day-to-day recording task easier.

Instructions

1. Measure the components that you will need to access on the top of your work-surface for length requirements with a measuring tape. Components like small audio mixers, laptop computers and studio controllers or speaker switchers may need to be kept where you can easily access them for use.

2. Measure the height of any racks that house rack-mountable equipment like microphone preamplifiers, compressors, limiters or other components that you want to put under the work-surface for easy access. In most cases, small racks will be just below 30 inches high, making them ideal for under a standard 30-inch work-surface.

3. Purchase a prefabricated tabletop made to the length desired. If you need a special length, you can use a flat solid-core door or 2-inch thick piece of a hardwood. Most lumber suppliers and hardware stores can cut doors and pieces of wood to your specifications for a nominal fee.

4. Buy a table base or two pedestals that are 29-1/2 inches in height to support your tabletop.

5. Using wood screws and table cleats, connect the wooden top to the table's base with an electric drill. In most cases, four outside screws will be enough to hold the table together, if less than 200 pounds will be placed on top.

6. Paint or stain the top of the table and base if desired. For the best possible results, use a paint sprayer in an outdoor area where there is no wind. Paint sprayers can be rented from most hardware stores for a small daily or hourly fee.
