Clean records sound better.
Vinyl records sound better when cleaned and played on a properly adjusted turntable. Dust and dirt lodged in the record grooves will cause the stylus (needle) to skip or grind contaminants deeper into the record, potentially damaging the recording. You can buy LP record-cleaning solutions or make one yourself with household ingredients and a plastic spray bottle. The goal is to clean out the grooves so your music sounds better.
Instructions
1. Adjust the tracking weight of the tonearm to the lowest setting recommended for your phono cartridge by dialing the knob on the back of the tonearm. An excessive tracking weight wears out your records faster and reduces audio quality.
2. Mix three parts distilled water to one part isopropyl alcohol in a plastic spray bottle and add a few drops of the photographic wetting solution, which is available at camera stores.
3. Place a record on the turntable and spray a light mist of the cleaning solution on the grooves.
4. Rotate the record clockwise by hand with your fingers on the center label.
5. Press a clean microfiber cloth gently against the record surface to lift off dust, grime and fingerprints. Let the record air-dry for a few minutes before playing.
