Decoration Suggestions For A '50s Grease Party

Consider renting a jukebox for a '50s "Grease" party.

"Grease" is one of the first movies that comes to mind at the mention of the '50s. The classic film has many fans and provides plenty of inspiration for a '50s party. The theme works well for the birthday of a "Grease" fan or of someone who was born in the '50s. Find ways to incorporate major elements of the movie and the decade into party decor.

Posters

Posters are a simple way to dress up any party area. Look for posters from "Grease," then frame and hang as if at a movie theater. Or, simply tape them to the walls. If you can't find "Grease" posters, blow up images from the movie to create your own.

Jukebox

A jukebox makes a '50s-themed party. Call your local party store to see if they have any for rent. Renting a jukebox also allows guests to have fun by selecting the party music. If renting a jukebox isn't an option, create a cardboard version for decorative purposes. Use a large sheet of cardboard as the base. Draw the basic shape of a jukebox on the cardboard. Cut it out and paint it with bright colors. Attach the cardboard jukebox to the wall.

Gym Decorations

Decorate the party area to resemble the high school gym in "Grease." Hang streamers around the party area, draping them along the ceiling to create a canopy. Run streamers along the walls for additional decoration. Set up spotlights to create a high school dance feeling in the venue; this works best if the "Grease" party is held in an actual gym or a large party hall. To make a plain hall look more like a high school gym, place colored tape on the floor to create the basketball court lines.

Vinyl Records

Vinyl records are another classic symbol of the '50s. Suspend vinyl records from the ceiling. Or, if you don't want to use actual vinyl records, cut circles out of black poster board. Cut a smaller hole in the middle and add a record label to the circles. Poster board records are lighter and easier to hang, plus you don't have to worry about ruining real records.

'50s Car

Cars play a big role in "Grease." Create your own '50s car out of cardboard for a wall decoration. Draw the side profile of a '50s car, like the ones featured in the movie, then cut out and paint the car. For a creative photo opportunity, prop the car up against cardboard boxes. Guests can sit behind the car so that it looks like they are driving. Take a photo of each guest in the car and send a copy with a thank you note.
