Designing Suggestions For A nineteen fifties Reunion

A jukebox helps recreate the feeling of the '50s.

Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, sock hops and soda jerks represent the culture of the 1950s. These pieces of history serve as inspiration for the decorations for a 1950s reunion. The fashion of the decade provides inspiration with bold colors like red, yellow, black and pink and patterns like geometric shapes, checks and polka dots. Incorporating the symbols of the decade makes it easy for the guests to relive their own memories from the '50s.

Soda Fountain

Recreate a 1950s soda fountain at your reunion. If you're holding the event at a venue with a bar, use that area as the main soda fountain display. Decorate the front of the bar and rent retro bar stools to place in front. If possible, have the bartender serve fountain sodas and ice cream drinks to further create the feeling of a retro soda shop. A jukebox helps set the mood. If the venue doesn't already have one, check with local party shops to rent one. As a last resort, create a mock jukebox by cutting out a large piece of cardboard and painting it to resemble a '50s jukebox.

Record Photos

A display of old photos of the reunion guests incorporates the record theme from the decade. Cut out record shapes from black paper. You'll need one for each guest. Cut out a photo of each of the guests from the '50s and place each photo in the middle of one of the records. If you have a current picture of the reunion attendees, place it on the opposite side of the record. Suspend the photo records from the ceiling. Placing them over the food table allows you to hang them a little lower so everyone can see the pictures up close.

1950s Cars

A car from the '50s makes a fitting way to greet the guests to the reunion. Check with guests of the reunion to see if any of them own a car from that decade. Another option is to contact a classic car club in your area to inquire about renting a car for the evening. Park the car near the entrance of the venue near a welcome sign. If you can't score an actual car from the '50s, cut out a car shape from cardboard and paint it as a wall decoration.

Cardboard Cutouts

Life-size cardboard cutouts work well as wall decorations for the reunion. Think of various symbols of the '50s that you can recreate. Ideas include poodles, guitars, gumball machines, horn-rimmed glasses and letter jackets. A life-size cutout of '50s icons like Elvis and Marilyn Monroe also work well and create a photo opportunity for reunion guests. Posters are a suitable alternative for decorating the walls.
