Using an old PC as a digital jukebox is a great way to make use of old hardware. While older computers often can't handle modern high-resolution video, even decade-old computers can play MP3s without any problems. A large computer monitor is preferable to a small MP3 player for managing a large library of music, and the keyboard makes it easier to search for music.
Instructions
1. Make sure that you have enough space on the hard drive of the old computer to store all your music. Then use an external hard drive to transfer all your music to the old computer.
2. Install your favorite music application. If you use a Macintosh you will probably want to use iTunes; otherwise; you have many choices, including iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp and Foobar.
3. Set the application to monitor your music folder. Most applications will automatically monitor your "My Music" folder, which is located in "My Documents" by default. If you want to use a different folder or an external hard drive, just go to "Options" or "Preferences" (depending on the software you are using), and select the folder that your music is stored in.
4. Connect your speakers and start playing music. You should consider purchasing new speakers if you are currently using the speakers that came with your computer. A simple setup with two midrange speakers and a subwoofer is a great place to start.
