Discover When My Computer Was Built

Computers don't have model years like cars do.

Finding out the exact age of your computer is complicated by the fact that computers aren't so much built in a single step as they are assembled part by part. When your computer was made or assembled can tell you a lot about your computer and its capabilities. If your computer was made more than five years ago, it's probably substandard for a lot of applications. If your computer was put together within the past five years, you should probably be able to get. But the older your computer gets, the more obsolete it becomes for many applications.

Instructions

1. Contact the original manufacturer or seller with the serial number on your computer. At the very least, the maker or seller should be able to tell you when the computer was sold, giving you a better idea of when it was made. Most contact information for computer manufacturers can be found on their websites.

2. Open your computer case by unscrewing it from the back or pushing a lever or button to open the case. Look for model numbers printed on the various internal parts of the computer.

3. Go to the part manufacturer's website and contact the part manufacturer. The maker can tell you when the part was made. This will give you a good idea of when the computer was made.
