TaxACT is a software that can be used by novices and experts to prepare and file tax returns. The software is available in online and desktop versions. With the desktop version of the software, there is no option to file taxes electronically. You can only print and mail a hard copy of your tax forms. The online version allows you to do paper filing or electronic filing. As an added perk, electronic filing of your federal return is free. With electronic filing, you can have your federal refund within eight to 15 days.
Instructions
1. Visit the TaxACT Online website. Click the "Start Free Return" button that is located under the "Free Federal Addition" section.
2. Create a TaxACT account by entering your email address, desired username and password. Select the option to "Start Free Now." If you already have a TaxACT username and password from a previous tax year, simply enter your login information and click the "Sign In" button.
3. Click "Continue" to begin entering all of the information that is required to file your taxes. There are four tabs that must be completed. The remaining tabs allow you to enter information about Life Events, Federal Questions/Answers, and State Questions/Answers.
4. Click "Continue" after completing the State Questions and Answers. Review the information listed under the "Review" tab to ensure all of the information is accurate. If all information is correct, click "Continue."
