nineteen fifties Pool Party Ideas

A 1950s pool party is a great way to enjoy good clean summer fun, rocking out to Elvis's classic tunes and enjoying extra thick milkshakes by the water. With the right decor, you can transport guests back to the fifties for your outdoor event. Whether the guests are reminiscing about the fifties themselves, or only imagining what this decade was like, this theme will be fun for guests of all ages.

Music

Classic 1950s music will go a long way toward setting the right mood for your pool party. Put together a playlist of music exclusive to this decade. Be sure to include such famous artists as Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Holly and, of course, Elvis Presley. Classic songs like "Johnny B. Goode," "Rockin Robin," Blue Suede Shoes" and "Rock Around the Clock" should make the list.

Food

No party is complete without something to eat and drink, and this provides a great place to further your 1950s theme. Stick to casual, easy-to-eat fare that party goers can enjoy poolside, such as sodas, floats and milkshakes. For adult guests, you can also include martinis, mint juleps, Champagne punch and Manhattans on the menu. A big meal can be difficult to juggle in a bikini, but 1950s snack foods can be as simple as pigs in a blanket, fruit salad served on a bed of lettuce leaves, pretzels or cheese and crackers. If you want to serve an entire meal, try burgers, tuna melts and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Activities

While the pool itself will provide plenty of entertainment, you can also include a few games and activities appropriate to the decade such as a hula hoop contest. Set up a life-size poster or cardboard print of 1950s icons such as Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley for fun photo ops. If your guests will be settled enough for organized activities, try decade-appropriate trivia. For evening events, you can set up a mock drive-in theater by projecting a movie onto a large white sheet set against the house or hung in the yard.

Decorations

Adorn your pool party with as many authentic 1950s items as possible. Set up tables and a bar to look like a retro diner. Use plates decorated to look like classic records. Hand out plastic 1950s cat eye glasses as party favors and encourage guests to dress in retro bathing suits when possible. While an actual jukebox may be too much, an inflatable jukebox is a fun decoration that can double as a pool toy.
