Suggestions For '50s Birthday Celebration

Enhance a '50s party with diner-inspired details.

Use a '50s theme to infuse a birthday party with a charming retro flair. When decorating a celebration space with a '50s-inspired style, use classic movies, vintage diners and antiques as design inspiration. Focus on one aspect of the era, or combine several elements, such as vintage cars and old Hollywood stars, when creating the look.

Old-Fashioned Fun

Keep birthday party guests entertained with old-fashioned-inspired games and activities. Rent a karaoke machine and encourage partygoers to sing popular songs from the '50s. Hold a trivia contest featuring questions pertaining to the 50s. Play clips from retro television shows and movies and have guests identify them for prizes. Movie ideas include "Ben-Hur," "Some Like It Hot" and "All About Eve." As for television shows, opt to show scenes from "Dragnet," "Father Knows Best" and "The Honeymooners." Hosting a hula hoop contest will bring all guests to their feet, raising the energy level of the party.

Sock Hop Style

Host a '50s-themed birthday party in true sock hop style. When creating invitations, ask guests to arrive wearing retro clothing items, such as poodle skirts, saddle shoes, cardigans, white T-shirts, rolled jeans and black Converse tennis shoes. If it fits your party budget, rent a vintage jukebox playing 50s musics. You can also buy a CD featuring the '50s greatest hits from artists such as The Drifters, Buddy Holly, The Platters, The Coasters and Elvis. Designate a dance floor in the party space and decorate the walls with vintage record covers and neon soda shop signs. Treat partygoers to whimsical ice cream sundae kits as thoughtful party favors.

'50s Food

Transform the party space into a 50s-style diner by serving all-American retro treats. Cover the dinner table with a red-and-white gingham-patterned cloth and place chrome napkin and straw dispensers in the center of the table. Supply ketchup, mustard and other condiments in plastic squeeze bottles. Serve old-fashioned favorites such as hot dogs, corn dogs and hamburgers. Place onion rings and french fries in diner-style red plastic baskets. Treat guests to malts and root beer floats in tall, frosty glasses.
