If you have older 45-rpm records and other vinyl LPs, you might want to convert your music to CDs. Converting LPs to CDs will allow you to enjoy your older music in today's modern audio systems. Since vinyl records have given way to CDs and MP3s, record players or turntables are pretty much obsolete as well.
Preparation
Before copying your LPs to CD, you must clean them as best you can. Consider having your records professionally cleaned. This can be done by someone who has a Keith Monks cleaning machine. If this isn't an option, using a portable vacuum cleaner will help remove dust and dirt from the grooves of your LPs. Cleaning your vinyl helps reduce the chances that you will hear sound distortions when transferring your LPs to CDs.
If you don't have have access to a hand vacuum or a regular vacuum cleaner, you might be able to use vinyl cleaner to remove heavy dirt and dust from your LPs. However, this is a worst-case scenario, as using any fluid on your vinyl might cause sound distortions on the CDs.
Turntables
If you want the best sound when converting LPs to CD, invest in a high-quality turntable. If you don't have a computer or don't want the hassle of buying software and sound cards and connecting turntables to your computer, consider purchasing a turntable with built-in CD recording capability. The Lasonic LP-to-CD Recorder System and Ion's LP 2 CD are two devices that have this function.
However, if you want to go a step further, recording systems such as the Ion LPDock and the Crosley CR249 Portable USB Turntable allow you to burn LPs onto your computer's hard drive. These turntables also include software that allows you to clean up sound distortions and record LPs to CDs. The cables needed to connect to your computer are provided with the turntables.
The price of this type of LP recording system ranges from $300 to $500.
Recording
Recording LPs to CDs is rather simple once you have the proper equipment. Insert a blank CD in the CD player. Play your vinyl LP. Hit the "record" button on the CD player. This transfers songs from your LP directly to your CD. Conversely, if you copy songs from your LP to your computer, you will be able to use the CD recording software that was provided with your turntables, or you can send the songs from your LPs into a media player or jukebox. Windows Media Player and MusicMatch are popular ways to play music and burn CDs on the computer. Click and drag your newly added songs from an LP into the CD burn window. Once you have all the songs from your LP ready, insert a blank CD. Click the "start burn" button.
