Build computer skills to help advance your career.
If you dream of a career in Information Technology but lack the necessary computer skills to qualify, you can learn advanced skills in a variety of ways--and at your own pace, if you so choose--to help prepare you for an IT career.
Instructions
1. Purchase books and software to learn at your own pace. Video tutorials can help you learn programming and advanced skills in the comfort of your home and in front of your television, if you like. Lessons are available on DVD and include workbooks that will help you to follow along. These materials can be purchased from many online retailers like Amazon, eBay, and Half.com.
2. Use online tutorials. Many resources are available in the form of online tutorials to help you learn about hardware, software and programming. Learn perform basic computer maintenance, upgrade your software and the fundamentals of Internet security. The Microsoft website and 3WC Schools are among those that offer tutorials to get you started. Learn HTML, XML, CSS and SQL, as well as server scripting and web building.
3. Enroll in an Information Technology degree program. An associate's degree is required for most entry-level positions like computer programmer, systems administrator, graphic design and help desk technicians. A four-year bachelor's degree is required for positions such as systems engineer, game production, web development and digital media production.
4. Get Microsoft-certified. A certification will show prospective employers that you have the skills and the knowledge to do the job. A high GPA score is impressive but certification means that specific computer skills have been tested and proven.
