Free Visual Novel Games

Visual novels are video game simulations of a storyline which often enable players to interact with the story. These novels are frequently created by Japanese designers or by fans of Japanese animation and story telling. There are many of these novels available for free download. You can also make your own. Some examples of the free visual novel software programs are noted in the resource section.

Narcissu

"Narcissu" is a visual novel that came out in 2005. The main story of "Narcissu" involves two young, terminally ill characters in a hospital. Yu Atou is 20 years old and dying of a terminal lung condition. Setsumi Sakura is the young girl that falls in love with Yu Atou. They both decide to flee the hospital and end up finding themselves in Awaji Island, in the narcissus fields. The game is designed to provide a cinematic experience, giving players the feeling that they are watching a movie. Decisions can affect the game flow and direction, but the ultimate ending remains the same. You can listen to the soundtrack "jukebox" mode by selecting that option from the side menu.

True Remembrance

There are many twists and turns in the plot as it advances. "True Remembrance" is a "non-decision" game. Players can turn on "auto" mode which moves through the screens without the arrows.

Panda Samurai
