Items To Accessorize To Create A Classic Kitchen Look Better

Find accessories that make an old kitchen stand out.

Revive an old kitchen with classic antiques or modern accessories that bring in color or improve the kitchen's overall look. Almost any kitchen includes basic accent pieces such as cookie jars, appliances or hand towels. But plain, standard accessories may not improve the kitchen's look, so select items that upgrade the style and feel of the room.

Glass Bottles and Pottery

Feature different styles of glass and pottery to improve the look of an older kitchen. These items can go on top of cabinets, along window sills or on the counter. Look for old-fashioned yet colorful cobalt blue or purple glass bottles with corks. Place these on window sills or on top cabinets along with other accessories. Pottery showcasing vibrant shades of red, rustic orange or lime green can also help liven up your kitchen. Pottery goes well on top of cabinets, but you can also display pottery inside a kitchen china hutch with glass window doors.

Ocean Decor

Ocean decor can blend well with an old kitchen that already has white cabinets and a few old appliances. Decorate the window sill with seashells and clear glass bottles filled with sand. Find small, medium and large rocks and paint them deep blue, baby blue and green. Adorn the window sill and the tops of the cupboards and counters with a few of these rocks. Decorate with ocean-themed hand towels and curtains. Hanging up a few framed pictures of ocean scenes or beach sunsets can also bring new life to an old kitchen.

Vintage Art

"Good Housekeeping" magazine recommends using vintage art -- other than rooster pictures -- to decorate the kitchen. Find decorative colored frames with shades that match the colors in the art. Frame colorful vintage pictures of recipe pamphlets, copies of paperback art books, ads or cartoon images of women cooking in the kitchen.

Furniture and Other Accessories

Bring in furniture that complements an older kitchen. A painted or refinished cabinet and table can add more appeal to the room. Dress up the table with a blue or white and red checkerboard tablecloth. Place a vase filled with silk flowers in the middle of the table to add more color. A china hutch filled with colorful trinkets, pottery and other decor can also give an old kitchen more charm. Old yet stylish antiques such as a miniature jukebox or Betty Boop cookie jar looks nice in an older kitchen.
