Americana Decor
Americana style decor is a celebration of American styles, regions and eras. While the name typically conjures up the image of a room full of stars and stripes, that's really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this style of decorating. There are many ways to implement Americana decor, in any room in the house.
Patriotic Americana
A room inspired by the American flag is the most recognizable style of Americana decor. The color pallet is typically red, white and blue, but it doesn't have to be so literally interpreted as to make a room look as thought it is wrapped up in a flag.
For example, a country home interpretation might include a big red sofa, and an old blue checkered country quilt with white stars, and a stenciled border of red and white hearts. A different way of carrying the look out in a more contemporary style home is to have a sleek, white sofa and chair, red square throw pillows and a few cobalt blue accessories placed in the room.
Another way to carry out the look is by employing Colonial style decor, using antique Colonial furniture or furniture inspired by the Colonial style. Add a few accessories such as a replica of an old, aging map of the original 13 Colonies and some Revolutionary War memorabilia displayed on shelves to complete the look.
Regional Americana
Anyone who has traveled to the different regions in America will notice each has its own distinct flavors. Traditional styles from region to region vary and can be incorporated into Americana decor.
One can draw from the coastal regions, incorporating nautical themes, light houses, old shipping maps and model ships. Alternatively, one can draw from the Southeast's coast with its pink flamingos and tropical birds and fish. Another option is to focus on the famous Route 66, with travel trinkets on the shelves and antique license plates from different states as wall art.
To capture a region, incorporate folk art into the decor, photos of historic landmarks or American Indian pottery and artwork from that region. Furnish the room with pieces made of the natural materials native to that region, such as bamboo from the South, redwood from the Northwest or drift wood from coastal areas.
Americana Pop Culture and Icons
There are many things from American pop culture, or American icons, that you can use to build a room in Americana style decor. For example, mom's apple pie, Coca-Cola, Cadillacs and model T Fords are images ingrained in American culture that could be used as inspiration for decorating a room.
Consider the glamor and glitz of old Hollywood. This can be embodied with fine furnishings reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s styles. Hang framed posters or commemorative plates featuring American icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, James Dean, the Marx Brothers or Charlie Chaplain.
Another possibility is to use the idea of the American diner for inspiration. Use chairs of chrome and vinyl with Formica tables, or a breakfast nook resembling a diner booth. Red and white checkered table cloths, '50s style kitchen appliances or an old jukebox make great additions. Soda fountain style glasses and antique signs featuring popular brands of food from the past help complete the look.
