Shake Rattle And Roll Decoration Ideas

The jukebox was a classic fifties feature in many diners.

One of the first rock 'n' roll records to achieve wide recognition was the song, "Shake, Rattle and Roll," in a version by Bill Haley and The Comets in 1954. Popular music from the 1950s can make an interesting theme for interior decor. Take your inspiration from the popular TV show "Happy Days" and the movie "Grease," which are both set in the fifties. With such a large range of retro fifties-style decor available today, this cool, stylish rock 'n' roll look is easy to achieve in any home.

Walls and Floors

Black and white tiles were a popular fifties feature.

Black and white, red, hot pink, mint green and turquoise were all popular colors during the fifties. The use of contrasting colors is typical of the era but your color choice is by no means limited to these colors. Pick one bright color, red for example, and use it to create an accent wall. The other walls can be painted in a neutral color. Black and white tiles are an ideal choice for flooring to create a fifties diner appearance.

Furniture

Choose a few pieces of bold furniture, such as red vinyl bar stools.

Molded plastics and vinyl were an integral part of fifties decor. There is a large range of retro fifties furniture available, from love seats to bar stools, couches and even diner-style booths. These statement pieces can be used alongside other more standard furniture; you don't want to create the sense of a '50s museum. Furniture in the fifties was mass-produced and very simple, with clean lines and little to no detailing.

Music

Display old vinyl records alongside musically themed artwork.

Rock 'n' roll was an important part of life in the '50s, as it was the choice of music for all the cool kids and bad boys. Musicians such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly were hugely popular, so the addition of a piece of art featuring one of these fifties legends will complement the retro theme. Other ideas include artwork featuring musical notes and guitars or display vinyl records in frames. A retro record player or vintage jukebox will complete the look.

Accessories

Add a retro dining table.

Accessories such as retro lighting, tin signs, pictures featuring 1950s cars and bright cushions and floor rugs with bold patterns will complete your retro fifties look. Choose cushions and throws that complement the color of your accent wall. In the kitchen, add tin advertising signs featuring hot dogs, hamburgers and cola and a retro wall clock. Neon advertising signs were also popular. Add a retro dining set or booth for an authentic '50s look and don't forget the red-and-white checkered napkins.
