The debut of "The Simpsons" in 1989 led to mass marketing of the product and characters. Along with T-shirts, toys and posters, arcade fans got to take the role of the Simpson family in the Simpsons Arcade Game. The plot of the game follows Homer, Marge, Lisa and Bart as they try to rescue Maggie from Mr. Burns. While the arcade cabinets are nearly impossible to find, computer owners can download and enjoy this classic game for free.
Instructions
1. Go to Rom-World.com. Rom World is host to thousands of older video games from systems like NES, SNES and Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME). The Simpsons Arcade Game is a MAME game, and an emulator must be downloaded to play the game.
2. Click on the "MAME" link on the left side of the website. When the next page loads, find the "Emulator" link and click it. Two MAME emulators options will load. Click on the first option and download the emulator to your desktop for easy access.
3. Click on the "MAME" link again to find "The Simpsons Game". The game ROMs are sorted alphabetically. Click on the "S" link.
4. Scroll down the page until you find a list of Simpsons games. Look for the Simpsons Arcade Game with a U.S. listed after the title. This is the best version and all of the other versions are foreign or incomplete files. Click on the link and click on the "Download" link that appears on the next page.
5. Save the downloaded game file to the MAME emulator's ROM folder. Load the MAME emulator by double-clicking on the program's icon. "The Simpsons Arcade Game" will appear on the list. Use the keyboard's arrows to select the game and press "Enter" on the keyboard.
6. Add "credits" to the game by using the "F4," "F5," "F6," and "F7" keys. Each key represents a different character. Choose "F4" to play as Homer, "F5" to play as Lisa, "F6" to play as Bart and "F7" to play as Marge.
7. Use the arrow keys to move the character back and forth and up or down. The "Z" keyboard button will make the character jump while the "X" button will make the character attack. Press both moves together to perform a combo move.
8. Collect food throughout the game to earn life. When a character grabs you, press buttons repeatedly to escape. Defeat end-level bosses by hitting them until their body's blink and eventually are defeated.
9. Defeat the game by battling Mr. Burns in a robotic machine. Move often to avoid his electrical shocks and attack him in the center to destroy the machine.
