Help Make Your Own Mp3 Very Good Music Player Utilizing An Old Ibm Netvista

An IBM Netvista makes a very large MP3 player, but it will work.

Classic computer systems, such as the 2002 IBM Netvista, are not powerful enough to run a full suite of applications. But these machines can be converted into single-use devices, such as a dedicated MP3 player. Granted, you cannot carry around your Netvista with you as it is a PC. But you can certainly set it up in a corner with some computer speakers for use as an MP3 player.

Instructions

1. A dedicated MP3 player on your Netvista requires a download of free software.

Download Knoppix Linux Live CD/DVD as a .iso file. To do this, go to the Knoppix website and look for the download link. You can also take this opportunity to download and install the .iso burning tool on the same page.

2. Blank CD disks are cheap and handy for creating live Linux disks.

Burn the .iso image to CD or DVD. The IBM Netvista might not have a DVD drive, in which case you will need to burn the CD version. It is important that you burn the file you download as an image file, or it will not boot up properly on the Netvista.

3. A USB stick is invaluable for backing up essential data from your HDD.

Back up your hard drive on your Netvista. To do this, simply put a memory stick into your Netvista's USB slot and copy the information onto the stick. Hard drives of Netvistas are about 4 to12 GB, which is the standard size of current USB sticks. You can skip this step if you have nothing worth saving on your Netvista hard drive.

4. Reboot the computer with the burned CD/DVD already in the drive.

Place the burned CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive of you Netvista. Reboot the computer, making sure the BIOS is set to boot the CD/DVD drive first. Do this by pressing F8 or F12 at the start up screen. When the Knoppix screen appears, select the first option (boot into live mode), then wait while the system loads onto your computer.

5. Your IBM Netvista will make a nice MP3 player, but it will not be portable.

Once the Knoppix screen loads, you now have an MP3 player on your computer. Knoppix comes with all the codecs and software necessary to play all your music files. Do this by copying music files to a USB stick, by inserting a CD/DVD of music into your CD/DVD drive, or by hooking the Netvista up to the Internet and downloading the files. To play the files, go to the "main menu," "audio" and "xmms/mplayer/xine."
