Types of Media Players


Play audio, video and multimedia files using free downloadable media player software. Much of the software runs on Windows, but some products operate on Mac OS X, Linus and Unix operating systems. The computer is the primary hardware device used, however, some software will run on television, portable devices and proprietary hardware. The major media player software is updated and enhanced as popularity rises.


Windows Media Player


The latest Media Player version 11 runs on Windows XP and Vista, and it supports two new file formats: Windows Media Audio Pro and WAV. Store recorded TV, video pictures, album artwork and music then view, play or sync to another device like a mobile phone. Share with other devices from a central location. The enhanced user interface has new options and more library categories to store and play millions of music tracks. Store albums by a common theme like release date or genre. Media Player 11 runs on most XBox and Sony Walkman devices.


iTunes


ITunes application for Mac OS X and Windows plays video and music, and wirelessly syncs a variety of files to Apple TV, iPhone or iPod. Browse by album, artist, year, episode or rating and create personal playlists and shuffle songs. With the new iTunes 8, any iTunes store song becomes an iTunes Plus song with original recording sound quality. ITunes automatically creates playlists based on songs clicked using the "Genius" button, and "Genius" recommends other selections. Speed, accessibility and a 3D visualizer are additional, new features.


GOM Media Player


Play file types like AVI, DAT, Xvid, MPEG, WMV, DivX, ASF and MOV without using additional software. Use the built in codec finder for the few formats not internally supported. Play broken or corrupted files and get playback immediately without waiting for complete download. The standard product includes a built in screen capture tool, setting customization and pop-out play list. It runs on Windows Vista, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Windows Server 2003.


JetAudio Media Player


Record, rip and burn audio CDs, and play music or video files. The latest version includes a media center with a media and CD library, auto browsing and playlist and port files to other devices. The new graphical user interface is fully integrated, the sound is clearer and it supports sound effects. Supported formats include AVI, MP3, OGG, MOV, WMA, Real Media, MPEG and DVD video. Convert to other formats; use the remote recorder or the synch lyric feature for karaoke. The software runs on Windows 98, 2000, Me, Vista and XP.


Winamp Media Player


There are three free versions and the full or bundle have 35 features including a trademarked capability to chart, track and share past listening selections. New features include improved iPod Synch, iTunes import and online radio. Fifty-five file types and 15 languages are supported. There are 2,836 skins and 3,628 available plugins.


VLC Media Player


This open source software records live streaming video, advances frame by frame and plays back slow or fast. Customize the toolbars for best personal use. Play streaming AirTunes. The basic file formats are supported as well as MP2, MP4, MP3, OGG, HD codes and DivX. Play back from zipped files. Run VLC on Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
