Possess A '50s Wedding

Style icons like Audrey Hepburn give your wedding '50s Hollywood glamor.

As a modern bride, your wedding gives you the opportunity to put your personal stamp on the time-worn or traditional. From the clothes you wear to the decorations you use, you can bring a sense of romance and style to your special day that is as individual as you are. Add a touch of Hollywood glamor to your nuptials with a '50s themed wedding that taps into the innocence and sophistication of a bygone era.

Instructions

1. Set the tone of your wedding with vintage invitations that feature polka dots, lace, pearls or black and white photos. Use pastel colors, particularly pink, to underscore the decade's innocence. If you plan a more fun rock and roll theme, use invitations that feature music records.

2. Buy vintage clothes for the wedding party. Weddings in the '50s mixed casual and formal, with the guys wearing colored sports coats and the women wearing pastel colored tea-length, belted dresses with flirty, flouncy petticoats. Include accessories like hats, gloves and bows for the ladies.

3. Buy or use a vintage wedding dress. It too can be tea-length and belted, with a sweetheart neckline and lacy bolero jacket or stole. Enhance the dress with pearls and lace, and accent the dress with pastel colors like pink.

4. Enhance your bridal couture with vintage accessories. Use a small hat with a birdcage netted veil, gloves, a beaded purse and peekaboo toe shoes. Use bows and ruffles to further accentuate the sweet girly innocence of the '50s, and complete the ensemble with vintage jewelry like brooches and pearls.

5. Use a classic pinup style glamor look for your hair and makeup. Apply muted colors on your face and eyes with a bold, dramatic swipe of eyeliner. Use bright reds on your lips for a vibrant pop of color. Mimic 1950s starlets like Audrey Hepburn for a glamorous hairstyle.

6. Decorate with a mix of vibrant or muted floral arrangements, which enhance the girly innocence for your special day. Dusty pinks and whites especially allow color to set the vintage mood for your wedding; roses in particular work well within this color scheme.

7. Keep it going through to the reception. Skip the band and rent a jukebox for your reception, and fill it full of '50s standards and Golden Oldies. Hold a '50s tea party with vintage Chintz china, dainty tea cakes and your own signature cocktail. Give your wedding cake a vintage feel with tiny pearls or damask patterns.

8. Use a classic car for both your arrival to the wedding and departure from the reception.
