Rockbox is an alternative firmware for some Apple iPods.
Rockbox is an open source alternative to the default software on many popular mp3 players, including some iPods. It allows a high level of customization, use of third-party themes and installation of games, including the classic first-person shooter, "Doom." The iPod's original firmware, however, remains available after Rockbox is installed. Alternatively, if you no longer wish to use Rockbox at all, it is a simple matter to remove it altogether, returning the iPod to its original state.
Instructions
Restart in Original Firmware
1. Shut down the iPod by holding the "Play" button until the screen goes blank.
2. Turn the device back on by pressing "Menu" and "Select" (the central button) simultaneously.
3. Immediately push the "Hold" slider on top of the iPod into the "on" position (indicated by a visible patch of color). The iPod will now load the original firmware.
4. Hold down "Menu" and "Select" again without engaging the "Hold" slider to return to Rockbox mode.
Remove Rockbox
5. Connect the iPod to your computer with its USB or Firewire sync cable and launch iTunes if it does not start up automatically.
6. Locate and select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar. It may take a few seconds for the device to appear.
7. Click the "Restore" button in the "Summary" tab. If the computer is a Mac, you will be prompted to authorize the process by entering an administrator's user name and password.
8. Wait while iTunes restores the iPod's firmware. This may involve downloading the latest version of the software if it is not already on your computer. Once the restore process begins, a progress indicator will appear on the iPod's screen.
9. Sync the iPod when the restore is complete and the device reappears in the sidebar. Restoring an iPod erases its contents, so this sync is necessary to refill it with music and other content.
